Rock Energy Systems would like to congratulate Ben Leisher our recent graduate of the 2019 Summer Rock Internship Program. Ben is a rising senior at Beloit Memorial High School and worked in our Engineering department for six weeks this summer as a paid engineering Intern.

The purpose of the Summer Rock Internship Program is to accelerate personal, as well as professional, skills development and career-related exposure for rising High School Seniors. This structured, earn-and-learn (paid internship) model provided students with a meaningful, career pathway experience that will serve as a foundational element of their Academic & Career Plan (ACP); thereby, positioning students for future academic and workplace success. As such, students gained: valuable interviewing, job searching and resume building experience; direct, career exposure at a worksite; opportunities to develop or improve communication, critical thinking, leadership and teamwork skills; and important networking connections.

"I was fortunate enough to intern at Rock Energy Systems after my Junior year for most of the summer as an engineering tech. My main project was reorganizing and cleaning up the PDM which contained all the company files, but I also helped in research and development and worked on a few smaller projects such as development of work instructions and performing maintenance in the sage catalog. My proudest moment by far was finding a roundabout way to transfer the file that had continually froze the PDM when we attempted to move it.
The projects that I worked on gave me an idea of what working in the field will be like and what I can expect moving forward. It helped to confirm that I wanted to pursue a career in engineering and showed me what I can do to ready myself for it. I also learned a lot from my co-workers; especially from John and Nikko in the engineering department. They taught me about the PDM and how to navigate it, what to look for in the files that I was sorting through, and how to use sage. They also shared words of wisdom with me and gave me advice about my future and school.
The work environment was very welcoming and friendly. There was always someone who could help me if I was having trouble with a project. It was a great experience that exposed me to some of the applications like sage and solidworks that I will have to use once I get my degree and start a career in the field.
